Day 33 Casar de Caceres - Embalse de Alcantara

Ana Maria, Katrin and I left the Albergue this morning at around 0715 hrs and after a breakfast of "Cafe con Churros" we exited Casar de Caceres, past the "Ermita de Santiago".  I must record our thanks to the people of this small town for their marvellous hospitality and for their fine cheese which we had the pleasure of tasting last night.  Our thanks also to Katrin who prepared a very nice salad for our dinner last night.  We bought the wine, a very nice bottle from Monasterio de Tentudia, a monastery that we passed a few days ago.  Needless to say we slept very well!

The path today followed the old Roman road again, along very sandy paths, where we came across a substantial number of the Roman Milestones which have been unearthed in the local archeological digs around here.  The going was good mostly over ondulating hills with large rocky outcrops.  We came across several herds of cows, flocks of sheep and a number of fierce looking bulls.

The main problems today were my left foot where the pain in my heel is still severe and my right foot which has developed a large blister also on the heel which has become quite painful.  The heat did not help as it was extremely hot today with very little shade.  At one point the path divided for about three kms and we elected to go via the N-630 to avoid the path at that stage which becomes very rocky and difficult to walk on.

Katrin, being the young person she is decided to go the hard way and we reached the first bridge almost at the same time.  In the end we had to cross over two bridges which meant having to walk along the N-630 for several kms.  In the heat our feet were burning and it took all our willpower to complete our 14 mile trek today!

In the end it was worth it as we have arrived at a lovely Albergue overlooking the Embalse de Alcantara, a large lake which is fed by the rivers Almonte and Tajo.  The views from here are fantastic and after something to eat we are now relaxing.  Ana Maria could not resist taking a photo of me preparing our blog for today!  Thankfully the telephone network connection here is very good and we have been able to access the internet without too much trouble.

Tomorrow we are going to try to leave earlier as we have another long day ahead from here to Canaveral and then on to Grimaldo where we hope to spend the night.

  1. Dear Friends,

We have seen your blog, while searching for information about El Camino (Via de la Plata).

We are a couple from Barcelona that has met last year at El Camino Francés, and are now planning to cycle Via de la Plata next August from Sevilla.

Your Blog is very inspiring for us and beautiful. We are enjoying with your trip and taking good notes on it.

The blisters need care and attention. Do you know "Compeed"? You can ask in a Pharmacy.

Buen Camino. We'll keep in touch.
